It's not a secret that I struggle 99% of the time with my self-confidence. I'm surrounded by demons which remind me of my flaws at every second of the day. And it really sucks. But, once in a while, I'll put on an outfit which actually makes me forget the demons for a little while. It's as though it has some kind of magical power.

The Melissa dress from Dolly + Dotty is one of the magical ones. I put this on and instantly loved it. The dress is strapless, but the bodice is shaped in such a way which makes it super flattering and there's none of my usual issue (I have something of a pear-shaped figure, so strapless dresses can sometimes be a bit of a problem for me). But this fits so perfectly, it's almost as though it was made for me.

The skirt on the Melissa is wonderfully full - it's not pictured with a petticoat here, although I'd certainly make it more of a "party" look by adding one - there's more than enough space for it. I felt all swooshy all day in this dress and in a stroke of luck, the parcel delivery gods were being good to me, as this cardigan happened to arrive on the same day, so it seemed like fate and I decided I rather like them together.

I'm never far from a nautical outfit choice and getting as far as red, white and blue with some polka dots thrown in for good measure meant I opted for these anchor print tights to finish off my nod towards the nautique trend, as my mum and I used to refer to it.

I'm trying hard to decide on which color to order my next Melissa dress in, although I'm very much swayed by the anchor print one (see above point). Which is your favourite?

  5. I do wish you didn't have your demons...you are gorgeous, inside and out!
I love this dress as it reminds me of one I made when a student from a pattern that I found when we cleared out my grandmas. It must've been an original 50's one. I made a little pillbox hat to go with it too, the red spotty fabric with red net and tiny white beads sewn onto the netting. Its' one claim to fame was that I wore when singing in the college band, on stage at the Assembly Rooms in Worthing, at a college shindig. Thank God we didn't have mobile phones in those days!!
